Should you request a sliding scale rate?

Great question! If you plan to request a sliding scale rate from me, I ask that you please read this page in its entirety.

I offer a limited number of sliding scale appointments per month. These slots are intended to be used by people who are disproportionately impacted by capitalism and its many forms of structural discrimination. Clients who choose this appointment type may choose to pay between $80-$110/hr for their tattoo, with a $120 appointment minimum. Please see the guide below to help you decide if sliding scale is right for you, and where to pay on the scale. I will never question where you choose to pay on the scale. I trust my clients to respect the intention behind this offering.

I consider my regular hourly rate to be fair based on my current level of experience, speed, and business expenses (shop rent, supplies, scheduling system, etc). Please do not occupy one of these spots in my schedule if you can afford a regular, full price tattoo from me or you do not meet criteria in the second bulleted list.

Consider booking a regular, full price appointment if you:

  • Have full-time, stable employment that pays a comfortable wage

  • Can regularly afford your basic needs

  • Have savings, investment accounts, and/or inheritance

  • Have access to family money and resources in case of emergency

  • Travel recreationally or are traveling from out of town to get your tattoo

  • Have a relatively high degree of earning power due to education and work history, and/or privileges related to race, gender, cognitive and physical ability, etc.

  • Are not currently exercising your earning power by choice (i.e. not working or working part-time, by choice)

Consider booking a sliding scale appointment if you:

  • Experience discrimination, systemic oppression, and/or violence based on your race, gender identity, sexuality, nationality, legal status, physical/cognitive ability, etc.

  • Are an unpaid community organizer

  • Struggle to obtain consistent work/comfortable wages due to criminal history

  • Rarely have an opportunity to get tattooed

  • Are eligible for public assistance such as SNAP
